Is Final Fantasy Sexist?

 Yes.

In a gaming landscape where AAA games take years to create and cost outrageous sums of money to produce, where selling the maximum amount of units is the goal just to keep a big game company solvent, choices and been made in recent years that have magnified the glaring problem within Final Fantasy.

Women are only important if they are serving the men in the story. Serving their development and giving their lives, their souls, to help the protagonists to achieve their goals. (See Lunafreya, Jill and Aerith.) Alternatively women serve as titillation, feminine ideals or are just there to ideally flirt with the player to make him feel good. This applies to the rest of the FFXV women, Cindy, Aranea and Iris follow the above points respectively. Tifa is now positioned as the homemaker, mother figure with giant boobies and a heart of gold. Also recall the Jessie rewrite in Remake.

Women in Final Fantasy in this era do not stand alone on their own merits, with their own stories. They are only as important as the male protagonists need them to be and will wait patiently in the sidelines pining until they are noticed (Jill).

As stated, I believe this is due to the developers making the conscious choice to appeal to the player, the consumer, the maximum amount of people buying the video games. The majority of the developers and consumers skew male. The developers are appealing to male sensibilities whether it's giving Lightning jiggle physics or excising a character that ultimately challenges the protagonist rather than enabling his quest (Stella from Versus XIII).

It's not about telling the best story or giving every character their own arc. Not anymore. It's about appealing to men and how they feel about women and ultimately, it's about selling video games. That is why Final Fantasy, in this era, is sexist.

March 2024

I haven't got much more to say at the moment. My family has gone through a tough week, we all shared a tummy bug and it involved a lot of feeling wiped out and prone and the evacuation of all our insides. We're just about recovered and I feel like there's no reprieve, just constantly moving forward. It's fine, I'm just tired.

February 2024

I'm so behind on this, looking back this list feels like it was last year. Baby is encroaching on 9 months and she's at that stage where she's responsive and laughing and clapping and thankfully not too interested in moving about too much. She just sits and takes it all in and smashes items together. Weaning started off as a nightmare but we're muddling through. I'm back at work and everything is starting to fall into place. I still have a wobble now and then but it's starting to feel a bit more like I'm on stable footing rather than adrift.

Also, assume I watched Love Island All Stars but I didn't keep up with it. Same with Celebrity Big Brother. I realised I didn't end up having the time or energy for any of that nonsense. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth came out and all my time has been sunk into that, hence why this is so late.

January 2024

It feels like I'm on a precipice, again. Baby is starting at nursery today, I'm going back to work soon. We're going to start finding a new routine, a new normal. It feels like a moment in time where things are starting to fall into place. I feel dizzy.

December 2023

I keep putting off doing this because I keep feeling like it's such a waste of time and effort to copy and paste and embolden things and just put it out there... Like what's the point? Why am I doing this?
For posterity! I guess. So some day I can look back and I can see this. Because life is just an endless catalogue of experiences and it's nice to know I've gotten this stuff written down. It's just for me right?
If it's not obvious I'm very tired and tilting into a bad place but I'm optimistic things will improve, including my mood. Baby is 6 months old and toddler is nearly 3 years old. We've been watching movies together over the winter, that was nice. The holidays were hard. I'm just happy to be here and trying to get by. I'm lucky. I'm grateful. I'm incredibly tired.

November 2023

It's December somehow. It's another year nearly done, we have advent calendars and there's a blanket of snow outside, we have a 5 month old and a very excited toddler. I don't know how life just keeps chugging along and we're managing, it's hard but we're still here. I couldn't do this without my husband. He is my rock.

Would you believe me if I told you I actually got bored of Big Brother and missed a few episodes and then just didn't watch the last week? Well that happened. I really wanted my percentage of movies directed by women to be higher this year so I went pretty hard searching them out. It's been a challenge and it's kept me busy. Oh, also I saw Poor Things at the local film festival, I put the kids down and drove through an hour in the dark on my own (I hate driving) watched the movie after being frisked for filming devices and then drove back to get home for midnight. It was a very lonely very weird experience as I can't really talk to anyone about it. I'm holding out for a wider release. I can't wait for it to be a big conversation.

October 2023

I've settled into a system where I can watch at least two movies a day. They are all on my phone and I watch them intermittently when I'm holding the baby either feeding her with a bottle or rocking her to sleep. She's not well today, I'm so tired and worried. But I still find time to shut it all out and dip in and out of other places, other countries, other times, other worlds. It's a distraction, even if it's in short bursts.

Big Brother has started again. What is this? 20 years ago? Who am I?

September 2023

I keep forgetting to do this but I know that I will feel better in years to come being able to look back at all of this and seeing everything laid out. Seeing if I remember watching these things. How I felt at the time. Tracking whether the particular day I wrote these posts were good or bad. Knowing there would always be a mix of everything and that my days are so confusing at the moment. Mostly just tiring. Baby is 3 months old, we reached 100 days recently, it felt like a big deal but we just breezed through. We seem to be breezing through all the big moments. The little one just keeps getting bigger and more smiley. It's lovely and exhausting.

Wes Anderson released a bunch of shorts based on Roald Dahl shorts at the end of the month and they were lovely.

August 2023

Baby is two months old, it's been a rough few weeks. I don't have the energy or the enthusiasm to watch much but I try. I really try. My birthday felt like the biggest none-event. I just wanted to cry. Some day, things will get easier. I will find time to just be and I will learn to enjoy my own company again. Until then... I'll do what I have to in order to keep chugging along.

Can't believe I slept on June along with July. Well I can. Baby arrived on 1st July and all I've done is watch Love Island and Cillian Murphy movies since. I could have done more. I miss sleeping. But I know things will get easier. I hope that's the case. I'll try and keep my progress when I can. Just keep chugging along and all that.

May 2023

We moved house and I'm in my last month of my pregnancy. It's all happening at once. I'm knackered. But I'm laid on a sofa in my new home and I've finished work so I'm on leave now. I should be able to relax but who knows. I can't wait to meet my second daughter.

Succession and Barry finished. I enjoyed them both. Looking at the past month feels like a different person was watching all that stuff.

April 2023

I'm passed the 30 weeks mark in my pregnancy. It's all downhill from here and the belly is getting bigger and I'm getting more and more tired. But we're on our way. There was a trip to the hospital because she might have shifted position but I couldn't feel her, but she was okay. I just want everything to be okay. I'm just waiting for everything to change again. That's how it is.

I've got a lot of TV shows at the moment but no real focus. Trying to relax but there's a lot of bank holidays this month and it's hard with a toddler.

March 2023

Six months into pregnancy and it's getting to that point where I'm starting to dip into that familiar territory of existential dread. I'm starting to recall how my previous experiences overwhelmed me and I'm trying my best to not be afraid. I just can't help it though. I'm scared.

Finally Love Island is over! Part of my routine has been expunged and I'd like to say I feel a loss but it wasn't a good series. I rewatched The Bear with my partner and I maintain it's the best show I've seen in a long time, probably on par with Barry.

February 2023

Still chugging along, still pregnant. I keep saying that to myself. Even though I've been through this before and I have a very rambunctious toddler hugging a stuffed kangaroo to sleep upstairs, I still wake up every morning and have to remind myself. The belly is getting bigger, I can feel limbs moving around inside of me, the heartburn has started earlier and it's driving me a bit mad already. I don't want to be chugging from a bottle of Gaviscon but it's going to happen. I just have this nagging feeling that something could go wrong. For the most part I'm okay but I can't help but worry.

I'm watching Love Island and it makes me feel dirty.

January 2023

I guess it wouldn't be bad luck to say I'm nearly 20 weeks pregnant. Yep, there's another one on the way. I'm so tired but I'm excited. To boot, we're moving house and it's going to be a big change.

Sometimes I lie down and it feels like I'm at the top of a water slide. The water is gushing past me and I can feel the momentum building behind me. I'm just waiting, with my eyes closed to take the plunge.

Winter Love Island is on and it's terrible. I continue to watch it.

December 2022

It's the end of another year. A time for reflection. Mostly just tired out and trying to cope with a toddler who doesn't understand why they haven't been to nursery in over a week. She's doing well. She's so active and talkative and amazing. She never ceases to amaze me.

I can't say much else, I've tried to catch up on movies this month but there's still so many more I want to watch. There have been a couple TV shows I've started and given up on and a couple I've happily finished, but I've decided not to stick with stuff if I'm not invested. I would say Andor and The Bear were excellent TV.

November 2022

If it's of interest to anyone, I have very little enthusiasm for the end of the year and the celebrations and lights and excitement that come with it. I just can't say why or what is going on to anyone as it's too uncertain right now. I don't do well with uncertainty. It makes me recede within myself. So I'm just masquerading as someone who is fine and hoping it is enough to get by.

I'm back to sporadically watching Gilmore Girls. I've definitely watched more than I've recorded, I just forget to write them down.
I also completed a Final Fantasy IX speedrun in one sitting, I got up at 5.30am and had the run going before 6am. I finished around 4pm (I had to sing Melodies of Life). It was a long tiring day but it was an experience. We just don't talk about what happened with the final boss.

October 2022

Not much to report. Baby loves exploring the autumn leaves and running in puddles. Otherwise, I'm just chugging along, feeling a bit tired but not hopeless.

It feels like a year ago that I watched Married at First Sight, that was such a bad idea... I'm trying to keep up on movies and such but I also want to read. Streaming is keeping busy and out of trouble and it feels nice to talk to people who don't really know or care about my humdrum existence if that makes sense... I dunno.

September 2022

I'm still chugging along. Sometimes I feel physically unwell, sometimes I just feel tired. I have the most amazing child growing up in front of me and she's running, laughing, talking and singing. She never ceases to amaze me. I'm keeping busy and trying not to worry but it's hard sometimes with lots of things happening beyond my control. I'm keeping my head up, mostly.

Mt streaming is going well but that means I haven't watched many movies since I have been just sticking to trashy or easy to watch TV on instead. We travelled for a bit in the past month and it gave me the opportunity to finish reading a book for the first time in forever, that was nice.

August 2022

I'm barely keeping on top of this, it's almost embarrassing. We were unwell through most of the month and it got me down but I'm still trying my best and forever grateful that I have a happy and loving family. I'm all over the place. But I'm keeping busy. That's the main thing.

I thought I'd watched more but I suppose not. I did get to go to the cinema and see Brad Pitt and watch my favourite movies around my birthday. I also got the husband briefly interested in Elaine May which was fun.
